Epalrestat is an aldose reductase inhibitor, which can reversibly inhibit the aldose reductase from glucose to sorbitol in the polyhydric alcohol metabolism related to the pathogenesis of diabetes complications. It is known that sorbitol can affect the function of nerve cells, and its accumulation in neurons will cause peripheral neuropathy symptoms of diabetes that controls sensorimotor.
